Valley County’s treasurer reported on Jan. 12 that the county billed approximately $44.6 million in property taxes and special assessments for 2025 and collected roughly $28.4 million between Nov.10 (tax bill date) and Dec.31.
The treasurer said 25,187 tax bills were mailed and that the county collects for 21 taxing districts and 11 types of special assessments. She noted that Valley County’s portion is about 26% of the total levy and that the county’s share collects roughly $10.6 million, with $8.1 million (76.5% of the county share) funding current expense.
The treasurer highlighted a new online portal that went live in mid‑November, allowing residents to view tax and assessment notices, pay via credit card, debit card or eCheck, set up recurring payments and reduce counter visits. “This new system was amazing this tax season,” the treasurer said, adding that the portal brought efficiency to a small staff processing a heavy workload.
Operational details provided included that 67% of payers still used checks (about 8,875 checks processed), only 50 property owners paid in cash (about $35,000 total), and there was a notable increase in credit card and eCheck use compared with prior years. The treasurer also flagged $3.1 million in special assessments, led by residential solid‑waste fees (more than 50% of specials) and commercial solid‑waste at about 13%.
What happens next: The treasurer’s office will continue to promote the online portal and process the annual tax and assessment reporting for the commission. The county’s external audit is scheduled Feb.10–12.
