Snoqualmie proclaims January National Mentoring Month; Empower Youth highlights reach and volunteer needs

Mayor Jim Mayhew read a proclamation declaring January 2026 as National Mentoring Month in the City of Snoqualmie and thanked volunteer mentors for their service.
Kathy Hyland, program coordinator for Empower Youth, said she coordinates the Youth Success Mentoring Program for Snoqualmie Valley Schools and introduced volunteer mentor Amanda Wright. Hyland noted long-term volunteers in the audience and highlighted local participation.
Amanda Wright described meeting weekly with a fifth-grade mentee and said the mentoring program “now reaches all 17 schools across this Snoqualmie Valley and Riverview districts, and we support about 160 kids each week.” She emphasized that one hour a week during the school day can make a difference, that training and ongoing support are provided, and that the program is actively recruiting volunteers during National Mentoring Month.
Kelly Coughlin of the Snow Valley Chamber also recognized several volunteers involved in emergency response and community service during a recent local emergency and presented certificates of recognition.
The council accepted the proclamation by voice vote and encouraged residents to consider volunteering and to contact Empower Youth for more information.
