Sarasota County Fire Department marks recruit graduation and multiple promotions

Assistant Chief of Training Bill Sturgeon opened a promotion and graduation ceremony for the Sarasota County Fire Department, announcing the recognition of 23 recruits and promotions including seven lieutenants, three captains, three battalion chiefs and a new deputy chief. Sturgeon said photos from the ceremony will be shared with those recognized.

Fire Chief David Rathman told recruits the oath they would take is a promise to serve the public and emphasized leadership, training and personal conduct. Rathman noted the department responds to more than 180 emergency incidents and transports over 100 people to area hospitals daily and urged recruits to "master the basics," "be humble, reliable and coachable" and to "protect your health, career, and integrity." He also related a promotion anecdote to underscore attentiveness and concluded with congratulations.

Emergency Services Director Rich Collins thanked first responders and families, and highlighted investments in training and staffing. Collins said a $60 million regional fire training facility is under construction on Knights Trail and referenced plans for additional apparatus and Station 27 to expand coverage.

Recruit class president Anthony Cardona thanked instructors and families for supporting the 10-week orientation and urged classmates to remain ready for duty. The ceremony recognized the skills competition winner, firefighter Michael Schultz, and Sarasota County Commission Chair Ron Cutzinger administered the firefighter oath. Deputy Chief Darren Wallentine introduced promoted officers and Fire Chief Rathman administered the officer's oath. A newly promoted deputy chief thanked leadership and pledged to serve with integrity.

The ceremony concluded with an invitation for family members to pin badges, group photos and light refreshments.
