Local tow operator asks Schererville board to update tow‑fee ordinance

Boon Lukasik of Stans Towing presented proposed updates to Schererville’s tow‑fee schedule during the board’s study session, saying costs — including insurance and recordkeeping — have risen since the town last revised the ordinance in 2021 or 2022. Lukasik provided a packet with the current fees and suggested increases he described as a "fair rate increase for the town."
"All the prices, the records, insurance, everything has gone up a lot since 2022," Lukasik said. He told the board the state does not set a cap on tow fees and pointed to several fees in the packet that have not changed in a long time, such as outside storage for semi trucks.
Town staff (Pete) said he will prepare an ordinance based on Lukasik’s materials, distribute it to board members for review and reach out to other tow companies on the current rotation (the board confirmed four companies are currently on that rotation). Board members requested another opportunity to ask questions before the item is forwarded for formal recommendation to the town council.
What’s next: Town staff will draft ordinance language incorporating the proposed fee changes, distribute the packet to board members and solicit any questions; the item will return to the board in ordinance form for formal review and a future vote.
