Police Chief Peter Sormoz told the Schererville Town Board of Safety that the department swore in two officers on Jan. 5 — one appointed from the emergency hire list and one from the eligibility list — and recommended returning to its standard hiring roster and starting new promotional lists for corporal and sergeant.
"So we were able to get 1 officer off that list," Sormoz said, summarizing recent hires and the department’s staffing moves. He told the board the existing corporal and sergeant lists expire March 7 and urged the board to authorize engagement letters, advertising and training now so the department can complete testing and certification without a gap.
The board first moved to suspend the emergency hire list and then voted to reinstate the department’s existing new‑hire eligibility list. Both motions were approved by roll call with all five voting members recorded as "Yes": Eric Graff, George Koros, David Ennegenberg, David Jarazewski and Robert Volkman. Each motion passed unanimously.
Board members also approved the department’s request to initiate new corporal and sergeant eligibility processes so advertising, a study period and interview training can occur before the current lists expire. The board discussed ensuring enough trained members of the Board of Safety would be available to serve on oral interview panels.
What’s next: Town staff and the police department will proceed with the engagement letters and advertise the promotional processes. The board recorded the approvals as routine, unanimous actions and did not attach additional conditions or amendments to the motions.
