Hammond accepts FAA and state grants and authorizes engineering work for runway design

The Hammond City Council on Jan. 13 approved a set of airport-related actions: acceptance of a $142,500 Federal Aviation Administration grant, acceptance of a $7,500 Louisiana DOTD Aviation Division grant, and authorization for the mayor to sign a $108,872.08 work authorization with Michael Baker International for engineering design on Runway 13/31.
City staff said the design funding is 100% covered by FAA and DOTD and that the work will produce engineering plans and cost estimates for repairing pavement degradation and a dip at the north end of the runway, which staff described as possibly caused by underground settling. Staff noted the council would review a corrected hyperlink to supporting documents when the related contract item was discussed.
"This is 100% funded by FAA and our Department of Transportation and Development, Aviation Division here in the state," staff said. "So there's no cost to the city for this." Council approved the grant acceptances and work authorization.
Council members were provided assurances that once designs are complete, FAA and DOTD would fund the repair project if the estimates align with expectations.
