Speaker 3 presented a proposal to redesign the front approach to the new courthouse, saying the current retaining walls are failing and the county would be better served by removing much of the hardscaping and regrading the site.
Under the plan discussed, the front grade would be lowered about 13 inches and the entrance reconfigured to provide a handicapped-accessible approach from 3rd Street. The proposal calls for removing a corner staircase and some sidewalks that currently put pedestrians close to traffic on Route 2. A single central walkway would direct visitors to 2nd Street. The committee was told the flagpole would be moved roughly 20 feet toward 2nd Street and replaced with an 80-foot aluminum pole to improve sight lines and reduce maintenance.
Speaker 3 said the design would eliminate much of the existing retaining walls and replace them with one retaining wall to control grade, add new trees and landscaping, and provide a more maintainable frontage. He estimated the proposed approach could save the county about $1,000,000 in long-term maintenance costs, and said architects are refining renderings that will be shown to the committee next month before bidding.
No formal vote or funding authorization took place during the meeting; the committee requested refined drawings and signaled interest in moving the proposal through the bidding process once designs are finalized.
