Director Toph told commissioners the Melody Lane crossing is undersized and the county is planning a precast box culvert to match upstream and downstream structures. "We're thinking that that's gonna be a box culvert that's gonna have to go in there so that we can have the proper size... without lifting our road 6–8 feet higher than what it is right now," Toph said.
Toph said the county will likely contract the Melody Lane installation because precast pieces are large and require cranes for placement; he noted each individual precast piece was quoted at about 26,000 (transcript shows '£26,000') and that the overall project may be "a couple of 100,000" though final cost estimates were not yet available.
Engineers have been hired to handle design work and potential FEMA map revisions related to the Coqualalo bridge project. Toph said he hopes to complete design and construction for the Coqualalo bridge for around $1,200,000 and has put money aside toward that project. Other bridges cited as moving toward bidding this season include the Rapid Lighting Bridge Number 4, Hunt Creek Bridge, and a bridge out at Colburn over the Pack River.
Toph said some wood-bridge grant programs favor certain structures — reference was made to the 'whiskey jack' and wood-bridge funding — and that the county expects multiple bridge projects to be active this summer. No formal contract awards or votes were recorded during this meeting; Toph said staff will continue design and bidding steps.
The county plans to prioritize culvert and guardrail repairs identified in its GIS asset inventory this summer, focusing on smaller-diameter culverts (12–36 inch) flagged in poor condition.
