The Bedford City Board of Education completed its Jan. 8 organizational meeting by swearing in new and returning members, electing leadership and approving several routine resolutions and appointments.
Anthony Atkins was administered the oath of office and later was elected board president following nominations; Chris Callender was sworn in and elected vice president. The oath language, read aloud during the ceremony, included the pledge "I, Anthony Atkins, do solemnly affirm that I will support the Constitution of The United States" and a promise to "faithfully and impartially discharge my duties" to the Bedford City School District.
Board members moved, seconded and approved a slate of organizational resolutions identified in the record as 2026-1 through 2026-31. The board also approved resolution 2026-33, which adopts the dates, times and places for the district's 2026 meetings, after discussion about typical scheduling and a July meeting date. Votes on routine organizational items were recorded as unanimous in the transcript (tallies recorded as 5-0).
The board appointed liaisons including an OSBA (Ohio School Boards Association) delegate and alternate, a student achievement liaison and a representative to the Bedford City Schools Foundation. Taylor Friedrich was appointed as the district's public records designee.
In financial business during the work session the board approved an alternative 2026 tax budget presented by the treasurer. The motion to adopt the tax budget was carried by roll call with the vote recorded as 5-0.
Several personnel and committee housekeeping items were also addressed: the consent agenda (including minutes and routine items) and non-administrative personnel recommendations were approved, and members volunteered for committee assignments covering building and grounds, curriculum, human resources, communications/community engagement, finance and policy.
The organizational meeting adjourned and the board resumed its regular work session before ending the evening at 6:59 p.m.
What happens next: The board asked staff to publish the approved 2026 schedule and committee assignments so the public can track meeting dates and community engagement opportunities.
