The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District board on Jan. 13 formally recognized the people who helped ensure student safety after a Jan. 10 school-bus mechanical failure that led to the bus being lost to fire.
Board members said the incident resulted in zero injuries. The board asked Merilee Schwartz, the bus driver, to stand and thanked her for safely parking the bus on the side of a busy expressway and accounting for all on board. The board also recognized Terry Piper for coordinating shelter and transport for the middle school cheer team and praised Coach Alyssa for moving students to the varsity bus and providing shelter and comfort.
The district read the names of the middle school competitive cheer team, noted the team’s second-place finish at a regional competition despite the incident, and invited the team and coaches forward for recognition and photos.
Board members thanked administrators, coaches and staff for their on-scene communication and rapid parent notifications following the incident.
No further operational actions or investigations were announced in the public session; trustees said they would await reports to understand precisely why the mechanical failure occurred.
