Chair asks legal review after wildlife services contract appears nonperforming

Chairman Ponce raised a concern Jan. 8 about a county wildlife-services contract the commission approved earlier in the year. He said the contracted agency has not been able to provide field personnel and that county funds and rancher contributions are not producing the expected services.
"I'm having a little problem with 1 of our contracts ... our wildlife services contract, they have not had anyone able to perform the duties that we entered into contract with them because they don't have anybody," Chairman Ponce said, and he asked legal counsel and the county manager to review the contract for possible remedies, including reimbursement or termination.
County legal counsel Drew Young (on the phone) and the county manager were asked to reach out to the contractor, confirm performance obligations, and report recommendations to the commission. Commissioner Stevens suggested inviting Wildlife Services to present to the commission or to send a supervisor if a field officer is unavailable.
Why it matters: The county is spending public funds on a contracted service; commissioners requested a legal and managerial review to ensure county residents and ranchers receive contracted protections or to recover funds if performance is deficient.
