Department of Public Safety and Senate security offices report drills, kiosks and encrypted keycards

At the Jan. 13 meeting of the Advisory Committee on Capital Area Security, Lieutenant Colonel Geiger of the Department of Public Safety gave a brief operational update and described near-term activities.
"Since we just met, last week, there aren't too many updates…we're continuing to review the actual report in more detail and determine next steps that we can take internally," Geiger said, adding that quarterly security meetings with building tenants have taken place and that internal and external tabletop exercises with law enforcement and security partners are scheduled for January.
The Senate Sergeant at Arms reported specific operational changes inside the Minnesota Senate Building: hiring additional staff with security experience; completing the installation of two security kiosks; beginning the rollout of encrypted keycard ID badges across the complex; and distributing updated emergency flip-book QR code stickers to House, Senate and Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) staff. The sergeant at arms said joint training with the House and LCC is planned.
These updates were presented as operational steps that advisers and security partners are taking while the committee continues its policy review and before any public recommendations are finalized.
