The Lawton City Council held a special meeting to recognize outgoing members, present service plaques and swear in newly elected council members.
Outgoing members Linda Chapman and George Gill were acknowledged by colleagues for years of service and local projects. Councilman Gill highlighted recent capital work, saying, "A lot of new roads, but a $180,000,000 in infrastructure." The mayor read plaques thanking both for "distinguished service, leadership, and devotion to the citizens of Lawton." Attendees were invited to take photographs with family following the presentation.
Following the tributes, the mayor declared the current administration to cease. Municipal Judge Nathan Johnson and an administering official led the statutory and city oaths; council members repeated language that they would "support, obey, and defend the Constitution of The United States, the Constitution of the State of Oklahoma, [and] the Charter and Ordinances of the City of Lawton." With the newly sworn members seated, the clerk called the roll and the mayor announced a quorum for the new administration.
Mayor Bridal welcomed the incoming council members and advised them not to rush, saying they would "get hit with a lot really fast" and recommending they work with the city manager and staff. Several council members offered brief remarks and advice to the newcomers, urging attention to constituents, familiarity with the city charter and teamwork.
The meeting ended on a procedural note: a motion to adjourn was made and seconded, a roll-call vote was taken and all present voted in favor. The mayor declared the meeting adjourned; refreshments were made available after the session.
