Summary
Canterbury Elementary principal Shannon Clark Wesson and math specialist Becky Meyer led a student math showcase where about 10 students demonstrated strategies and tools; principal cited district assessment results (78% meeting/exceeding expectations; FastBridge: 89% at/above 30th percentile).
Shannon Clark Wesson, principal of Canterbury Elementary School, opened a Panther Pride math presentation that invited roughly 10 students to demonstrate math activities, games and strategies to board members and the public.
Becky Meyer, described as the district math specialist, explained the district’s two sets of standards—the practice standards (habits of mind across K–12) and content standards by grade—and encouraged productive struggle and math identity in students. Wesson said the district is piloting new math curricula as part of a curriculum review and reported assessment outcomes: "we have 78 percent of students meeting or exceeding those expectations" and, from a recent FastBridge screener, "in math, 89 percent of students are at or above the thirtieth percentile."
Students introduced themselves by name and grade and rotated to share a tool or strategy with adults in the room. The presentation emphasized deliberate practice, collaborative reasoning and a positive math identity. Parents and board members applauded the student presenters.
