Town schedules public hearing on Unified Development Ordinance; staff will integrate parking‑placement suggestion

Planning staff told the commission on Jan. 7 that the Town of Saint John has posted the newspaper advertisement and an on‑site sign to notify the public of a Jan. 20 hearing on the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and a proposed map update. The draft map retains mostly residential classifications while adjusting certain districts and includes a newly created neighborhood conservation designation intended to preserve older subdivisions.
Staff said they would incorporate feedback received before the hearing, including a suggestion from an individual identified as Mr. Anshui to, where feasible in commercial districts, locate parking behind buildings rather than between buildings and the road to promote walkability between residential and commercial areas. "He would like to see in all commercial districts where feasibly possible that any developer move the parking to be located in the rear instead of in the front along the road to try and promote more increased walkability," staff summarized.
Staff also noted that chapter 10 (administration and enforcement) remains under legal review and that staff expects to receive comments in time to make any necessary revisions before the public hearing. The UDO public hearing was confirmed on the agenda for Jan. 20.
