Martinsville to advertise for city planner or compliance officer; engineering work remains under contract

The Martinsville Common Council discussed staffing plans on Jan. 12 and directed staff to advertise to fill either a city planner position or a compliance officer position — but not both.
During the discussion one council member urged consideration of retaining a city engineer, noting that an engineer can oversee infrastructure projects and project oversight. That member asked, “What's the state statute on having a city engineer?” Staff responded the city does not currently have a single full-time city engineer but contracts with an engineering firm, and that contractual arrangement satisfies state requirements for engineering oversight.
Council members agreed to advertise the position and to interview candidates to determine whether a city planner or a compliance officer best meets the city's needs. No hiring decision was made at the Jan. 12 meeting; staff will manage the recruitment and report back after interviews.
The exchange also included recognition of retiring personnel and brief thanks from council members for community service.
