The Martinsville City Board of Works and Safety on Dec. 29 approved upgrades to aeration equipment at the city wastewater treatment plant that officials said will reduce energy use and improve operational reliability.
Mister Oakes told the board the plant’s three 75-horsepower blower motors will be replaced with variable-speed motors that allow two units to run while a third serves as backup. "We're gonna run 2 at a time, but they run 24/7," Oakes said, and the change is expected to improve efficiency. The installed price quoted for the motors was $41,943.
Oakes also presented a Maxima Automation quote of $26,836.75 for the control and automation system to manage the upgraded motors. "This is a quote from Maxima for $27,000 … the exact number is $26,836.75," he said. A board member moved to accept the SCADA-system quote; the motion carried by voice vote.
Board members said staff are running a return-on-investment analysis to confirm the payback period. No detailed ROI figures were provided at the meeting.
The approvals authorize staff to proceed with the procurement and installation; the board did not set a project completion date during the meeting.
