Council orders summonses and requires proof of insurance for noncompliant liquor/entertainment renewals

North Providence — The Town Council on Jan. 6 authorized the clerk to issue summonses to a list of businesses whose liquor and entertainment license renewals were not in compliance with requirements for state tax, town tax, insurance and other documentation.
Council members read a list of affected businesses and discussed long‑standing practice of allowing businesses to explain compliance issues before taking revocation steps. Councilor (speaker 12) and others raised concerns about businesses operating while paperwork was incomplete and about the town’s liability if proof of insurance is missing.
The council voted to have summonses issued and delivered before the end of the week and directed that recipients provide proof of insurance within 48 hours of delivery. The clerk was also authorized to summon the named businesses to appear at the February council meeting for further explanation and potential resolution.
Next steps: Town staff will prepare and deliver summonses and request the specified documentation. The council said it will review compliance at the February meeting and consider further administrative steps if businesses remain out of compliance.
