High Point council issues MLK Day and Walk for Peace proclamations, hears community updates

The High Point City Council read and adopted proclamations honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognizing a multi-state Walk for Peace passing through High Point. Reverend Frank Thomas accepted the MLK proclamation and outlined a series of events including a breakfast, a parade and a day of service tied to the holiday.
Council also recognized a Walk for Peace group including organizer(s) identified in the resolution text and thanked Councilwoman Monica Peters for coordinating local support. During public comment, community members introduced local programs and initiatives: the Johnsons presented the new High Point Pistons semi-professional basketball team and requested sponsorships and community support; Angie Williams introduced Operation Excel, an after-school STEM program serving K–8; and an art installation titled 'Stitching Stories' at the High Point Public Library was announced.
Council members closed public comment, approved the consent agenda by voice vote, reminded residents of the voter registration deadline (Feb. 6) and reviewed upcoming meeting dates for January–March 2026.
