Flat Rock mayor says public meeting will precede any dam purchase after environmental testing

Mayor Beller said the city will not make a purchasing decision about the local dam until results of environmental testing are shared at a public meeting. "Before we vote on purchasing the dam, we will have a public meeting in which we will make sure that everybody knows exactly what we found out," he said.
The mayor told the council the city hired Pinchin LLC to perform core drilling and other environmental work at the site; he said the DCC recommended that firm. He also said the 60‑day review period for the issue ends on Feb. 6 and that the city is arranging engineering consultations with Canadian National Railroad to determine whether a nearby bridge is connected to the dam.
The mayor framed the next steps as investigatory and public: he said the city will provide regular updates at council meetings, hold the public meeting to present findings, and make no decisions about purchasing until after that meeting. He described outreach he plans with state and federal representatives and industry partners to advance priorities for 2026, including finishing Greenland Road and improvements to the city park.
The council did not make any purchasing decisions during the meeting; Mayor Beller emphasized the city will "nip rumors" by sharing findings publicly before moving forward.
