Council recognizes PAL students and declares Dr. Mel Pinder Day

The council opened its Dec. 10 meeting with an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance and several ceremonial recognitions.
Chief Beam (presenting) and staff introduced a student art contest for Marietta Police Department holiday cards and recognized four student winners by name: Jocelyn Mendoza (third place tie), Anna Olivier (third place tie), Sean McCraer (second place) and Sarah Slaughter (first place). The students were presented with gifts and the artwork will be used for department holiday cards.
The council also read a proclamation honoring Dr. Mel Pinder — described in the proclamation as an Olympic gold medalist, world record holder, Hall of Famer, Vietnam veteran and longtime Cobb County resident — and declared Dec. 10 as Dr. Mel Pinder Day. Dr. Pinder thanked the council and spoke about his foundation and new children's book.
Several outgoing council members and community members offered remarks of thanks and recognition later in the meeting.
