Crosby Township approves payment of past payroll taxes, agrees to adjust employee pay scale

Crosby Township trustees voted Monday to pay $27,297.91 in payroll taxes tied to 2017 and approved an adjustment to the township employee pay scale after returning from two executive sessions.

Fiscal officer Charlie Sabin presented an update on long‑standing IRS liabilities dating back to 2017–2018 and told trustees he had already filed and paid a prior obligation of $2,742,680. He said additional invoices and transcripts were arriving and asked the board to approve payment first and pursue dispute resolution afterward. "Pay it and then fight it," Sabin said, summarizing his recommended approach.

Trustees moved into a closed session to discuss payroll taxes and personnel matters. After the sessions, a motion to pay the 2017 payroll taxes for $27,297.91 was made and carried on a roll call vote. Trustees also moved to adjust the township employee pay scale; the board agreed to the change and recorded the roll call approval.

Sabin said he is requesting and reviewing IRS transcripts for multiple tax years and expects to pursue negotiations to reduce assessed penalties and interest where possible. He told trustees he would use executive sessions going forward while he processes past years and seeks guidance from tax or legal advisers.

The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Feb. 9, 2026. The fiscal officer said he will continue work to reconcile accounts and bring further paperwork to future meetings.
