The Temecula Valley Unified School District Board of Education opened a public hearing on Jan. 13 on the Temecula Valley Charter Schools renewal petition and invited public comment.
District staff explained the timeline: the hearing provides community members an opportunity to comment while staff and legal counsel analyze the renewal petition using a checklist (facilities shared-use agreements, memorandum of understanding, enrollment sustainability and the charter's ability to uphold stated commitments). Staff said any issues identified will be returned to the board in February for consideration. "Tonight's the hearing, February's board meeting... is when we come back and we bring it for approval," a staff member said.
Trustee Steven Schwartz urged staff to detail any items for clarification before further action; others, including Trustee Wiersma, highlighted high-performance recognitions for the charter and asked staff to bring needed details to the February meeting. The board voted to provide notice for the hearing and to conduct the hearing, with roll calls recorded as 4–1 on the related procedural motions.
Public comment during the hearing was limited and the board declared the hearing closed at 6:50 p.m. with staff to return with any checklist findings at the Feb. 10 meeting.
