Public Works reports paving and sweeping work, outlines sandbag locations and asks residents to report vandalized park lights

Carlos Castro, representing Richmond Public Works, briefed neighborhood leaders on Jan. 12 about recent street, sign and storm-preparation work and said staff are prioritizing repairs where vandalism creates safety hazards.

Castro said the paving crew finished projects including Visalia (between 15th and 17th), Toll Drive and 6th Street between Barrett and Mac, and that sign crews are following behind paving work. He said the sign program has refreshed roughly 75% of sweeping signs in the Fairmead Hilltop area and plans to replace neighborhood sweeping signs to make them legible and consistent.

For storm preparation the department maintains two self-fill sandbag stations: one by the Public Works courtyard on Harbor Way near the Greenway and another at 5100 Hartnett Ave (Bayview Library parking lot). Castro said senior or disabled residents may request sandbag delivery by contacting his office and that street-sweeping schedules may be adjusted during inclement weather.

Residents raised multiple reports of vandalized park lights. Tawfic Halaby (lighting) said vandalism has made it difficult for staff to keep up with repairs and asked residents to provide specific locations so crews can prioritize mitigation. Castro also noted routine operational details: sweeping is sometimes paused during heavy rain and parking enforcement is coordinated with sweeping to avoid issuing citations when sweeps are canceled.

Next steps: Public Works asked residents to report broken signs or dark park lights to the provided contacts so repair work can be scheduled and prioritized.
