Farmingdale Stone-Showroom Project Presented; Planning Board Closes Hearing, Reserves Decision

The Town of Babylon Planning Board on Jan. 12 heard a presentation for Job 25-23A, Derechy Stone Gallery, a proposed 12,213-square-foot wholesale stone showroom to be located at the northeast corner of New Highway and DuBond Court in Farmingdale.
Christopher Labate of Lab Crew Engineering told the board the project would replace an existing dilapidated dwelling on a 0.73-acre lot with a family-owned wholesale stone gallery open by appointment only, with four employees. He said there will be no stone cutting on site, materials will be cut off-site, and the project will seek three zoning variances (lot area, parking and setback). ‘‘This building will be used as a wholesale stone gallery,’’ Labate said.
Architect Raymond Caliendo (Art of Form Architectural Services) described the building as roughly 30 feet high with a dark stone and glass finish. The planning commissioner’s memorandum with outlined conditions and covenants was noted; Labate said the applicant has reviewed the memo and did not raise issues at the hearing.
During board questioning, member Juan Leon confirmed parking numbers with Labate (22 spaces proposed where 33 are required) and the applicant reiterated that customer visits will be by appointment during 9 a.m.–5 p.m. No members of the public spoke on the application.
Frank Santos moved and Daniel Chuchen seconded a motion to close the public hearing and reserve decision so staff and the board may review any outstanding site-plan issues. The motion carried by voice vote. The record will remain open for written comments; application plans and submission details are available through the Planning Department.
Next procedural steps were not scheduled at the meeting; the board indicated it will review any additional materials submitted by the applicant before issuing a decision.
