Community leaders and speakers gathered to mark the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area anniversary and highlight plans for its upkeep and public use. "Today, we gather to honor this amazing place," said Unidentified Speaker 1 as the event opened.
Speakers credited a multi-jurisdictional effort in creating and protecting the parcel. "It is a magnificent, magnificent creation that was put together by the town of Cave Creek, the state of Arizona, and, of course, Maricopa County," said Unidentified Speaker 3, who encouraged the public to visit the area.
Organizers emphasized the site's cultural and natural significance. Unidentified Speaker 2 noted Spur Cross is "known for its archeological sites and lush riparian landscape along Cave Creek" and stated the area "was designated a conservation area on 01/09/2001." Unidentified Speaker 4 pointed to petroglyphs and other traces of the Native American Hohokam people at the site.
Event remarks also highlighted local stewardship. Unidentified Speaker 2 said, "Park supervisor Kevin Smith has worked at Spurcross for more than 2 decades," framing that tenure as part of the park's continuity. Speakers traced additional layers of the site's past, referencing 19th-century mining activity and a history of ranching in the vicinity.
Several speakers recounted a community campaign to prevent development of the property. Unidentified Speaker 2 said residents "stood up, worked with the town, with the Maricopa County, and with the state" to preserve the acreage rather than allow housing development.
Looking ahead, Unidentified Speaker 2 said Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area "is part of a 3 year Maricopa County Parks master plan that will focus on improving trails, enhancing visitor experiences, and protecting natural resources for years to come." The event closed with a toast to the future: "Here's to the next 25 years," said Unidentified Speaker 3.
No formal votes, motions, or policy adoptions were recorded during the ceremony.
