Summary
The Poteau school board approved a trial contract to pilot Khan AcademyConmingo's Socratic AI tutoring with 100 students at Poteau Virtual Academy for 18 months at a reduced rate; approval was part of a multi-item contract vote.
The Poteau Public Schools board on Dec. 16 approved a contract to pilot Khan AcademyConmingo, an AI-based tutoring product, at Poteau Virtual Academy (PVA). The trial will enroll 100 students for an 18-month period at a reduced cost the presenter said was $3 per student (regular price $15).
Speaker 7, who introduced the item, described Conmingo as an AI tutor that uses a Socratic method rather than simply giving answers. "It's not gonna give them 8," the presenter said while explaining how the system walks students through processes to reach answers. The platform also includes a teacher portal that allows instructors to monitor writing prompts and student interaction with the tutor, a feature the presenter said can help detect cut-and-paste or inappropriate use of generative tools.
The presenter framed the pilot as a low-cost opportunity to explore whether an AI tutor could support instruction and grow with students: "This could be a really cool piece that brings AI in a useful way into our classroom," the presenter said. The board voted to approve the contract trial as part of a package of agreements discussed during the meeting.
Board members asked questions and discussed academic integrity concerns and monitoring. The presenter acknowledged those issues and said the teacher portal and the tutor's interactive design were intended to reduce plagiarism and identify when students were not engaging with the process.
The trial was approved by roll call as part of the contracts vote; the district will bring further updates if the pilot is expanded or adopted beyond PVA.
