Votes at a glance: council approves sewer change orders, roof replacement, rekeying, electric contract increase and hangar lease

At a regular meeting, Tuscaloosa City Council approved a slate of consent and contract items including sewer change orders, facility maintenance contracts, an electrical contract amendment, and an airport hangar lease.

Sewer change orders: The council approved change order No. 5 with Price Silver Service for $12,884.02 to close out 2023 sanitary sewer rehab work and a balance change order for a 3rd Avenue E trunk sewer repair with Suncoast Infrastructure for $15,390. Speaker 5 said the Price Silver change order is funded from the water/sewer pipe and manhole repair and rehab operational account; last year the on-call contract produced 49 work orders (about 70% proactive, 30% reactive). For the 3rd Avenue repair, Speaker 5 said the contractor uncovered a sinkhole and an inaccessible 50-foot section of pipe that required full replacement rather than the 10 feet originally assumed, producing the overage. Council approved these items by voice vote.

Facility work and security: The council approved a $139,010 minor public works contract with Metal Roofing Solutions to replace the portico roof at City Hall Annex 1. Speaker 2 said the existing roof dates to 1989, has chronic leaks, and will be replaced with a TPO thermoplastic membrane, new framing and interior finishes for the canopy. Council also approved a $45,000 contract with Building Specialties Company to complete rekeying for City Hall facilities, funded by the facility renewal security enhancements budget; Speaker 2 said this completes rekeying across Main Building, Annex 1, Annex 3 and Municipal Court Building.

Contracts and lease: The council approved amendment No. 1 to the public works contract with Taylor Electric Contractors to increase the not-to-exceed amount by $20,000 to a total not exceeding $40,000. Speaker 2 said unusually high repair volume and a staffing vacancy have required additional use of outside electrical contractors. The council also authorized an airport hangar lease transfer to High Maintenance Pursuits for an existing hangar west of the terminal; Speaker 6 said the lease name will change, the term will be 10 years with a five-year option, and the annual rent was updated from about $1,800 to $2,800 to reflect a prior rate adjustment.

All motions on these items were approved by voice vote. The meeting adjourned after the listed business.
