District staff said five building-renewal grant applications advanced to the assessment phase, naming Newell Barney and Jack Barnes for weatherization assessments and three roof-replacement assessments; the board approved a North locker-room and restroom build at Eastmark High that requires no additional district funds.
District construction staff updated the governing board on building-renewal grant (BRG) progress and capital projects and the board approved a separate Eastmark High School north locker-room and restroom addition.
Bob Lawson said the district was notified Dec. 26 that five BRG applications advanced to the assessment phase. "Two of them are for the weatherization of Newell Barney and also Jack Barnes," Lawson said, adding that the other three assessment awards were for roof replacements at Queen Creek Elementary, Desert Mountain and Newell Barney. He explained that the assessment phase identifies exterior-envelope repairs (paint, doors, windows and joints) and provides projected costs; an additional award would be required to fund construction.
Lawson also reported work on the Chrisman High School home-site grandstands will begin with footing construction in the coming weeks and that bleacher installation will follow after the school year. Lawson said the work "will not be disruptive to the school" and that contractors will barricade the area for safety.
On a separate action item, board members considered approval of a North locker-room and restroom addition at Eastmark High School. Presenters said the PE addition originally opened without finished restrooms or locker rooms due to budget constraints; remaining School Facilities new-construction funds and collaboration with the architect and contractor allowed the district to expand the project to include boys and girls locker rooms, coaches' offices and more than 275 lockers per room. Staff said this would complete the building, align with the district master plan and require no additional district funds.
A board member moved to approve the North locker-room construction using Core Construction; after a second the board approved the motion by voice vote (members responded "Aye"). The consent agenda and related personnel items also carried on voice votes earlier in the meeting.
Next steps: the district will proceed with the BRG design phase for awarded assessments and begin grandstand footing work at Chrisman High School; staff said bleacher deliveries and installation are planned after the academic year ends.
