Commission advances design exception for Austin River Road bridge replacement

The Caddo Parish Commission voted to advance a resolution asking for a design waiver and exceptions for the Austin River Road bridge replacement project, a single-lane timber crossing of Kelly Bayou.
A project representative identified in discussion as Mr. Bedgo explained the request: to preserve the current alignment the design must allow a straight approach rather than a super-elevated curve, and the design will use longer-span LG girders. "In order to get some longer spans to reduce on some drift, we have to go to LG girders on this bridge," the presenter said, adding the change will reduce the opening under the bridge by about one foot and should not cause flooding problems.
Commissioners discussed the federal Off-System Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program and how funds flow through the state Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Federal Highway Administration. The administrator said DOTD will handle most construction and inspection while local government participates in recommending candidate bridges for the program.
Commissioner Chris Crackman moved to advance the matter; the vote carried with the clerk recording 12 in support and none opposed. The matter was advanced to the regular-session agenda for final consideration and any required agreements with DOTD.
