The Anacortes City Council voted Jan. 12 to adopt updated legislative priorities and to hire a lobbying firm to advance two capital requests in the current Washington State legislative session.
Staff presented adjustments that remove a nutrient general permit item after recent Department of Ecology actions, strengthen language requesting preservation and maintenance funding for State Route 20 (Commercial Avenue repaving) and revise the title and language for what the city calls the Cap Sante Marina Community Event Center to better reflect the project. The city plans to seek $500,000 in the 2026 supplemental transportation capital budget for SR 20 preservation work and to request capital support for the event facility.
Council approved authorizing a lobbyist contract of $18,000. Mayor Walters and other councilmembers said the firm (named in discussion as Gordon Thomas Honeywell) has successfully worked on the county’s behalf and helped secure prior legislative awards. Councilmember McDougall noted the county’s experience with the firm and the favorable return on investment observed there.
Councilmember (speaker 2) moved to approve Resolution 3,207 incorporating the updated priorities; the motion was seconded and adopted by voice vote. Staff said they will present polished copies of the priorities to legislators during meetings next week.
