Anacortes council approves 2026–27 committee assignments

The Anacortes City Council approved a slate of committee appointments for 2026–2027 on Jan. 12, a rearrangement Mayor Pro Tem Cleland McGrath said was intended to rotate membership and preserve institutional memory.
McGrath told the council she spoke individually with members to identify at least two preferred committees and to ensure each committee retained at least one experienced member. She said the approach is meant to avoid stagnation and to give the eventual Ward 1 representative a balanced set of working relationships.
Several councilmembers praised the process. Councilmember Fantini thanked McGrath for “the time, effort, and thoughtfulness” she invested. Councilmember Young and Carolyn Moulton said the assignments balanced continuity and new participation.
No members of the public spoke on the item. A motion to approve Resolution 3,200 was moved and seconded and Mayor Walters announced the ayes carried, approving the appointments.
The appointments place existing members on planning (combined with housing and community services), finance, and public works committees and assign council leads for economic development, personnel, parks and recreation, and library matters. McGrath said the selection considered members’ expertise and opportunities to work across committees in coming years.
