DEQ reports post-restoration progress on Mountain Valley Pipeline, notes inspections and penalties

DEQ staff provided an update on the Mountain Valley Pipeline mainline project, saying restoration work is focused on achieving uniform, permanent vegetation and maintaining erosion-and-sediment controls until plantings are established.
The presentation included recent photos showing green vegetation, a description of work to install full-length water bars in locations where failures were identified, and a summary of inspection and enforcement activity. DEQ reported it inspected two complaints and performed 16 compliance inspections during June 20–Aug. 18; a third-party compliance contractor performed 220 inspections. Staff identified 73 corrective-action items and recorded two issues of noncompliance. DEQ said it assessed $7,000 in stipulated penalties in accordance with the consent decree for the quarter ending June 12.
Board members asked how long the plantings take to establish; staff cited photo dates (Aug. 4) but did not specify a planting-established timeline during the meeting; members estimated roughly two years to fully establish native plantings.
Next steps: DEQ will continue inspections, corrective-actions tracking, and post-restoration oversight until erosion controls may be removed.
