McCall council appoints Colby Nelson mayor, names new council president

The McCall City Council unanimously appointed Colby Nelson as mayor and selected Julie Thror as council president at its Jan. 8 meeting.

Council members discussed the duties and time commitment for the mayoral role before a formal nomination. After brief statements from the two interested members — one saying they "care greatly about families and all generations" and another that serving "would be a great honor" — a motion to appoint Colby Nelson carried on a roll-call vote. Nelson then took the oath of office.

Council also nominated and approved Julie Thror as council president in a separate motion; members said the role would support mayoral duties and represent the city at events when required.

Following the leadership changes, the council adopted two related administrative resolutions clarifying authorized signatories. Resolution No. 26-12 designates the mayor and council president as signatories on city contracts and Resolution No. 26-13 authorizes the new mayor and council president as signatories on the city's bank accounts and authorizes the mayor to sign necessary documents. Both measures passed on roll-call votes.

The new mayor and council president will assume responsibilities that include presiding over meetings, representing the city at state and regional gatherings and signing authorized documents on the city's behalf. Council members emphasized a transition plan and noted some related questions — such as how mayoral representation is balanced with the council president's role — will be discussed at an upcoming retreat.

The council adjourned the leadership items and moved on to its regular agenda.
