Commission approves Fairview Mine map amendment and rezoning

The Charlotte County Commission on April 22 approved a large-scale future-land-use map amendment and accompanying rezoning to allow regulated mineral extraction at a Fairview Mine site east of State Road 31. Planning staff said the property lies outside the county's MRE-prohibited locations, outside primary aquifer recharge and critical wildlife corridors, and that the existing site already contains authorized mining operations on part of the parcel. The Planning & Zoning Board recommended approval on March 10, and the commission voted to adopt the amendment and rezonings 4-0.
Applicant representatives said they will follow required permitting steps (commercial excavation permits and coordination with FDOT for any intersection impacts) and that the request covers mining of the remaining ~17 acres of the site. The action allows the applicant to proceed into permit review and compliance steps defined by county code.
