Johnny Christopher Spivey took the oath of office at the Alexander City Council meeting on Jan. 5, pledging to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the constitution of the state of Alabama" and to "abide by the Alexander City Police Department" policies and the law enforcement code of ethics.
Mayor Jim congratulated Spivey and thanked city staff for work over the holiday season, saying he is "amazed at the city hall staff" and noting the department will face "significant challenges" in 2026 that the city will try to keep the public informed about. Several councilors and attendees offered immediate congratulations following the oath.
Council also recognized long-serving staff at the meeting. The mayor and members thanked Jessica Sanford, who will be leaving this week to pursue private-sector work, and acknowledged other retirees and employees for their service.
The council proceeded to routine business after the ceremony, including committee reports and votes on procurement and program resolutions.
