The State Board of Education recognized Sarah Harden of Mullen Public Schools as Nebraska’s 2026 Teacher of the Year on Jan. 9. Introduced by David Jesperson of the NDE communications office, Harden described her classroom approach and community projects.
Harden described a recently completed geothermal greenhouse where senior students led younger students in planting and stewardship activities, calling the moment "this is why I'm here" as she reflected on the impact of hands‑on learning. She outlined her curriculum work — from botany in the greenhouse to dual‑credit chemistry through Nebraska Wesleyan — and emphasized building a classroom in which ‘‘every student belongs.’’ Harden also described long‑running outreach such as a STEM club and family STEM nights and noted her volunteer work as an EMT and training crossover opportunities.
Board members thanked Harden and encouraged her outreach to other teachers, including prospective teachers who might pursue transition certificates and alternative pathways into the profession. Commissioner Maher and board members congratulated her and wished her well as she represents Nebraska at national Teacher of the Year events.
Why it matters: The recognition highlights teaching practice in a small‑school setting and underscores recruitment and retention issues, especially in rural districts where one teacher may cover multiple subjects.
What’s next: Harden will travel statewide as Teacher of the Year and represent Nebraska at the national Teacher of the Year events.
