Vermillion County Council: ambulance update, library appointment, Soil & Water MOA and public comment

At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Vermillion County Council covered several routine items in addition to its budget and personnel actions.

Ambulance update: Julie Lanzone briefed the council on recent ambulance crew injuries and equipment incidents, including collisions and deer strikes that sidelined several medics. Lanzone reported staffing was improving as personnel return, and work on the ambulance building (truck-bay heating and interior renovations) is expected to proceed subject to weather and contractor scheduling. The council asked staff to check 2025 line-item balances and, if needed, pursue an additional appropriation to cover increased monthly payments under the ambulance contract.

Library appointment: The council approved the Vermillion County Public Library's request to appoint Connie Warner to a four-year term on the library board.

Soil & Water MOA: Connie Warner, board chair, and Eric Schuyler, executive director, presented a memorandum of agreement that documents county contributions to the district through 2029 tied to a USDA contribution agreement. The council approved the MOA after a brief wording clarification (reference to "council" vs. "commissioners").

Council statement on carbon sequestration: Speaker 2 read a prepared council statement correcting the record after public comments at a Dec. 17 commissioners meeting. The council said claims that members had expressed support for a proposed carbon sequestration project were inaccurate and reiterated it has not voiced support for the project.

Public comment and infrastructure alerts: Ron Mack, county surveyor, thanked the council for budget cooperation and informed members of possible ditch/road work and a large regulated drain reconstruction that could require grants or county loan support in the future.
