Council hears conveyance of two Spring Street lots to redevelopment authority for two affordable homes (first reading)

Staff said the parcels were conveyed to the city by the Greenville Hospital System in 2010 and noted the properties are shovel‑ready. GCRA representatives described typical product sizes of about 1,200 square feet, three bedrooms and two baths, and said they would pursue homeownership rather than rental units. GCRA also said it may partner with Habitat for Humanity and aimed to start work before the end of summer pending second reading.
Council members asked about product size, timing and whether infrastructure or sidewalks would be required for a two‑lot subdivision; GCRA and staff explained the lots are relatively small but consistent with traditional neighborhood zoning and that sidewalks are not required for a subdivision of two homes under current standards.
The item was presented for first reading; staff and GCRA representatives remained available for follow‑up before second reading.
