At the Jan. 13 Washoe County School District board meeting, Student Representative Maya Hartley reported on efforts by the Student Advisory Council to address chronic absenteeism by embedding college and career readiness into dual‑credit transitions, offering resume and scholarship support and connecting students with internships.
During closing public comment, Veronica Cortez — who identified herself as a Lemon Valley Elementary nutrition services employee and community member — urged the district to engage more directly with Sun Valley residents. Cortez described pedestrian and traffic safety concerns, limited evening availability for low‑income parents to attend meetings, and asked for district representatives to attend local meetings to hear neighborhood questions about parent pickup, crosswalk placement and street lighting. Superintendent Randy Ernst was noted taking notes and staff acknowledged the request for interagency coordination.
Trustees did not take formal action on the public comment but acknowledged the concern and the need for continued community outreach and translated materials for upcoming rezoning discussions and meetings.
