Rice Lake board keeps 2026–27 calendar as adopted after mixed survey feedback

Board members reviewed a staff summary of a calendar survey and debated tradeoffs including start and end dates, length of winter and spring breaks, and alignment with neighboring districts.

Staff reported 117 staff responses and 213 parent/guardian responses and presented preference breakdowns: roughly half of respondents preferred a start after Sept. 1 or late August, and a plurality preferred ending before Memorial Day. The staff summary noted varied satisfaction levels with the current calendar and that some families expressed childcare and coordination concerns for long holiday breaks.

After discussion about childcare availability during extended holidays, the timing of finals and spring-sports impacts, and the difficulty of making a calendar that satisfies all grade levels, a board member said the district should "go forward with keeping the calendar as it is" for 2627 and move remaining work back to the calendar committee. One board member moved to affirm that approach and the board consented to proceed as recommended. The board asked staff to communicate the survey results and the rationale for retaining the current calendar to families and stakeholders.
