Needham committee kicks off public process to decide future of Stephen Palmer building

The Stephen Palmer Property Development Committee held its first public community meeting to present the building's existing conditions, gather ideas for reuse and explain the steps the town must follow when the property reverts to municipal control.
Mary Anne Cooley, a Select Board member and chair of the committee, opened the meeting and said the session was intended as a “blue-sky” start to public engagement rather than a venue to address the separate tenant relocation process. Town Manager Katie King reviewed the agenda and introduced staff and consultants from Barrett Planning Group and Gamble Associates.
Judy Barrett of Barrett Planning Group said the engagement will include three community meetings and monthly committee work to develop three potential reuse concepts for the committee to review. “We want to hear from you,” Barrett said, describing tonight as the first of three community meetings that will inform a plan due in the spring.
