The Cottonwood Heights City Council on Monday approved ordinance 4 54, amending chapter 8.13 of the city code to revise rules for residential chicken keeping.
An unidentified staff member told the council the ordinance would permit residential chicken keeping for two-family detached residences and for townhomes, provided those dwellings meet the underlying standards in the code. The staff presentation said one setback standard would change from 40 feet to 25 feet and that the earlier-discussed side- and rear-yard setback provisions were retained.
Council member Holton moved to pass the ordinance and council member Hyland seconded. Mayor pro tempore Sean Newell conducted the roll-call vote and announced that the motion carried; council members recorded affirmative votes.
Why it matters: the amendment expands where residents can keep chickens within the city's residential zoning types and adjusts a setback measurement that affects placement of chicken enclosures. The ordinance does not change other existing animal regulations, which remain in chapter 8.13.
The council did not record any conditions or amendments during the meeting. The ordinance was adopted on the night of the vote; the transcript does not state an effective date or when the city will publish an updated code section.
