Teachers Jennifer Loda and Elaine Bell presented the proposed 9-day itinerary (Killarney and Dublin, then Stratford-upon-Avon and London) and tied the experience to English curriculum and canonical authors. "This will give them access to canonical authors like Yeats and Shakespeare," Loda said, and the presenters emphasized safety and logistics handled by EF, the tour operator.
The presenters described program elements and costs: the quoted trip package totaled $44,419 with a $95 deposit per student; a $200 early-enrollment discount was available if families met an enrollment deadline. They said a student could optionally pursue three undergraduate credits through the University of Southern New Hampshire for an additional $550.
During Q&A, the board asked about travel insurance, tips and group size. The teachers said EF provides a 24/7 support helpline, mandatory safety training for leaders and options for fundraising and scholarships. They proposed keeping the first trip relatively small (minimum 12 students; bus capacity up to 52) and said they would coordinate with other districts on group size if needed.
Mr. Scott moved to set aside policy and approve the proposed trip; Miss Custodio seconded. President Coleman called the roll; Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Shaw, Mr. Keller, Mr. Scott, Miss Custodio and President Coleman voted yes. The motion carried. Administrators said the board would require a post-trip presentation and photos when the teachers return.
The board did not alter district travel policy in the motion; it set aside policy for this specific approval to allow the trip to proceed.
