An on-the-record statement at the St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) board meeting on Jan. 13 said the Missouri State Board of Education granted the district provisional—not full—accreditation.
The statement, read to the board and public, said SLPS leadership is disappointed by the decision but emphasized it does not affect the district’s ability to operate schools, educate students, graduate seniors, or maintain local governance. "Provisional accreditation does not impact the district's ability to operate schools, educate students, graduate seniors, or maintain local governance," the statement said.
District officials told the board the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education typically bases accreditation on multi-year APR composites and that status changes outside a composite review year are uncommon. The district said it will seek clarity on the basis for the state board’s decision and will continue to focus on improving academics, financial and operational practices, and organizational culture.
The statement noted that an amendment to a broader accreditation motion at the state level singled SLPS out for provisional status despite other districts facing similar challenges. It said SLPS leadership — now under new district leadership — is prioritizing stability and measurable progress to support a return to full accreditation.
Board and district officials asked the community for support and said they will bring a clear plan to the public and the board. The statement closed by reaffirming the district’s mission to serve students, support educators, and strengthen trust with families.
The board did not take formal action at the meeting to change district governance or funding; officials said existing operations and resources remain in place while officials pursue clarification from the state.
