Franklin County commissioners elect Sabrina Maynard chair, name Rod vice chair; approve board assignments and meeting schedule

Franklin County commissioners completed their annual reorganization on Jan. 12, electing Sabrina Maynard as chair and naming Rod vice chair, approving the calendar for regular meetings and study sessions, and assigning commissioners to multiple outside boards and councils.
During the meeting, an unidentified commissioner formally moved, “I make a motion for Sabrina, commissioner Maynard to be chairperson for the year.” The motion was seconded and, following a roll-call by the clerk, was recorded as approved. The board then nominated and approved Rod as vice chair by roll-call vote.
The commissioners voted to keep study sessions and regular meetings at their existing times. The board discussed and then approved appointments of commissioners to outside organizations, including the East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging, East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation, Kansas workforce development board, Lake Region solid waste board, neighborhood revitalization, Ottawa Chamber representation, FCDC, Ransom Memorial, RC and D, Franklin County Food Policy Council, Prairie Paws and the hospital board. During that discussion, commissioners traded options for who would serve on multi-member boards and penciled in representatives (Colt, Sabrina, Rod, Don, Jeff and others were discussed and recorded).
On an administrative item, the board discussed naming an official county newspaper. The clerk noted that state statute limits the county’s choice; the Ottawa Herald was treated as the county’s official paper and the board approved the designation by roll-call vote.
Before adjourning, a county staff member proposed a field visit after the meeting (a roads tour) so public works staff could show commissioners candidate sites for chip-seal and other road maintenance projects. The presenter clarified the outing was for review and education only and that no decisions would be made during the visit; any recommendations would be considered at a later meeting.
A motion to adjourn was made and carried, closing the reorganization meeting.
What happens next: The board will proceed with the schedule and assignments as approved; public works will organize the proposed roads tour and return to the board with any recommendations at a subsequent meeting.
