Summary
Halifax County Public Schools reported every school is fully accredited under revamped state standards, while Cluster Springs and South Boston Elementary were federally identified (students with disabilities subgroup) and will receive multi‑year support plans and evidence‑based interventions.
Division staff presented updated accreditation and accountability results released Dec. 9, saying “we are pleased to tell you tonight that every school in Halifax County is fully accredited,” and explaining how the state’s redesigned standards assign schools to performance categories based on points for growth, mastery and readiness.
Presenters highlighted two schools that received federal identifications that change their public category: Cluster Springs scored 81.9 points but was lowered one category because of a federal identification tied to students with disabilities; South Boston Elementary scored 77.9 and likewise carries a federal identification. School staff described the federally required steps: conducting needs assessments, working with state school quality specialists, developing multi‑year support plans and selecting at least two evidence‑based interventions (commonly in reading and math). Plans will be shared publicly on school division webpages and monitored on an ongoing basis.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the role of past waivers and whether enrollment or school size explains performance. Staff said past waivers have expired and current accreditation designations are based on performance measures; fluctuations reflect differing student group compositions rather than school size alone.
Division staff said other schools previously identified showed improvement this year; those successes will inform supports countywide as the division implements targeted interventions for the identified schools.
