Derek Mason was elected chair of the Halifax County School Board during the board’s reorganizational session. The nomination for Mason was moved and seconded and the board recorded the motion as carrying “7 1.”
Jimmy Clayton was nominated and approved as vice chair by voice vote after a seconded motion. The board also approved Jeff Davis to serve as the superintendent designee to attend meetings in the superintendent’s absence and reappointed Lynn McKinney to continue as deputy clerk.
Board members approved meeting dates included in the packet, with a late addition scheduling a budget meeting for Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. The board adopted Robert’s Rules of Order, 12th edition, and acknowledged a code of conduct included in the meeting materials. The agenda and consent agenda were approved by voice votes.
The reorganizational items were handled at the start of the meeting, and several members congratulated the newly elected leadership and welcomed the board’s new and returning members. No contested ballots or roll‑call tallies beyond the recorded “7 1” chair result were reported in the public transcript.
The next formal board workshop and public hearings for budget and committee work were listed on the board calendar and will be posted for public comment.
