Taquan Graves was elected chair of the Danville City School Board at the board’s January 6 special meeting after an on-the-floor nomination and a roll-call vote that yielded six votes for Graves and one abstention.
The board opened nominations for chair and an unnamed board member nominated Taquan Graves. With no other nominations, the chair closed nominations and Miss Jones called the roll. Six members registered their support for Graves and one member, Miss Walker, abstained; the chair declared Graves elected.
The reorganization continued with a nomination for vice chair: Chair Pro Tem nominated Casey Cunningham. During the roll-call vote, four members named Cunningham while three members abstained. The chair declared Cunningham elected by majority.
Mister Spencer nominated Miss Jones for clerk; the board voted unanimously to elect her. Miss Spencer nominated Andrea Gilles for deputy clerk; that nomination also carried unanimously.
Miss Walker explained her abstention during the chair vote, saying she wanted to “acknowledge and thank our current chair for his service and commitment to this district,” and therefore abstained from the chair selection.
The chair congratulated the newly elected officers and asked Miss Jones to run the remainder of the meeting.
Next steps: the board will proceed with routine administrative items under the new leadership.
