The Conroe ISD SHAC voted to form a short-term technology work group to research the health impacts of classroom technology and screen time and to prepare recommendations for the council and school board.
The proposed work group, described by S2, is not a standing subcommittee but a time-limited team charged with reviewing research on technology’s effects on student health, evaluating current district practices (including the Bluebon curriculum’s role and technology expectations), and producing guidance the SHAC could present to the board. "The idea being to look at what is the current understanding of the impact of technology use in the classroom," S2 said.
Members discussed scope limits — the SHAC will focus on student health aspects of technology use rather than curriculum or instruction. Teachers noted state evaluation (T-TESS) can include technology use as part of evaluation measures and warned the work group should clearly define what “technology” means (Chromebooks, iPads, projection, calculators, etc.). One member urged caution: parents’ concerns matter, but the issue could become "murky" quickly without precise scope.
The motion to form the work group was seconded and passed by show of hands. SHAC chairs said the group will coordinate with district curriculum and counseling staff to collect data and draft a recommendation focused on student health outcomes, screen-time risks, and appropriate school-based mitigation strategies.
Next steps: recruit volunteers for the work group, engage district curriculum staff (e.g., Dr. Pesky, Dr. Winkler) for context on current technology deployment, and deliver preliminary findings within the group's short timeline.
